Huawei and Zambian Government Join Forces to Launch 100 Smart Villages

“The Smart Village Project will enhance living conditions, create over 5,000 jobs, and provide essential services to 400,000 villagers, marking a transformative step in Zambia’s rural development.” — President Hakainde Hichilema

Muchila, Zambia, July 17, 2024 — In a groundbreaking initiative poised to transform rural life across Zambia, Huawei Technologies and the Government of Zambia have announced an ambitious Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build 100 smart villages. The launch event for this significant project took place in Muchila, Namwala District, marking Zambia’s first Smart Village.

Muchila now stands as a beacon of progress with its new mini-solar grid powering a local school, clinic, and the homes of teachers. Additionally, the village has been connected to the global digital landscape through a Rural-Star communications tower, which offers wireless coverage and cuts network deployment costs by 50%. This innovative telecom solution is designed to address the connectivity needs of rural areas efficiently.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by President Hakainde Hichilema, who praised Huawei’s commitment to the Smart Village Project, turning what many initially perceived as a mere vision into reality. He lauded the project as a testament to the strength of Zambia-China relations and the tangible benefits being delivered to the Zambian populace.

President Hichilema highlighted the project’s role in enhancing rural life, noting, “This initiative aligns perfectly with our mandate to improve the lives of our rural residents. The successful launch of Muchila marks the beginning of a transformative journey for 100 more villages across the country.”

He also acknowledged the challenges posed by the current drought but expressed optimism that the new installations would alleviate power shortages and improve living conditions. The President revealed that he had suggested the Smart Village concept during his recent visit to China, with Muchila serving as the starting point for this initiative.

At the event, Mr. Wang Sheng, Charge D’Affaires of the People’s Republic of China in Zambia, commended both the Zambian government and Huawei for their collaborative effort. Wang emphasized that the Smart Village Project reflects China’s commitment to fulfilling the outcomes of President Hichilema’s state visit in September 2023. He highlighted the project’s potential to provide electricity and internet access to 100 villages, create over 5,000 jobs, and improve the lives of approximately 400,000 villagers who currently face limited access to essential services.

Huawei’s Vice President for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phil Li, underscored the project’s importance, stating, “Connectivity is the cornerstone of a brighter future. Digital transformation is crucial as it brings the necessary solutions to communities.” Li praised the Zambian government for its support and emphasized that Muchila’s success would pave the way for the development of 100 more smart villages, accelerating Zambia’s digital evolution.

The collaboration between Huawei and Zambia represents a significant leap forward in digital infrastructure and rural development. During President Hichilema’s state visit to China, the MoU on strengthening digital partnerships was signed, emphasizing mutual efforts to accelerate digital transformation across various sectors.

This ambitious project not only promises to enhance the quality of life in Zambia’s rural areas but also stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation in advancing global development goals.
