Empowering MENA SMEs to Embrace Net-Zero Strategies: COP28 Presidency Unveils Dedicated Program

Empowering MENA SMEs to Embrace Net-Zero Strategies: COP28 Presidency Unveils Dedicated Program

Posted on 7 October 20231 December 2023 By Editor No Comments on Empowering MENA SMEs to Embrace Net-Zero Strategies: COP28 Presidency Unveils Dedicated Program

In a significant step towards accelerating climate action within the private sector, the COP28 Presidency has joined forces with the SME Climate Hub and We Mean Business Coalition to launch a comprehensive program tailored specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Dubbed COP28 & SME Climate Hub for MENA, this initiative aims to empower SMEs to effectively implement net-zero strategies and contribute meaningfully to the global climate action agenda.

Elevating the Role of SMEs in Climate Action

COP28 & SME Climate Hub for MENA marks a pivotal moment in recognizing and elevating the critical role that SMEs play in driving climate action. By providing SMEs with the necessary tools and resources, the program seeks to enable these businesses to make a globally recognized climate commitment and join the United Nations-backed Race to Zero campaign. This commitment entails setting credible net-zero targets and developing concrete plans to achieve them.

Unlocking Access to Essential Tools and Support

The program will equip SMEs with a comprehensive suite of free tools and resources, including practical guidance, tailored training modules, and access to a network of experts. These resources will empower SMEs to effectively assess their current emissions profile, identify opportunities for reduction, and develop and implement strategies to achieve their net-zero goals.

A Regional Adaptation for Enhanced Impact

Recognizing the unique needs and challenges faced by SMEs in the MENA region, the COP28 Presidency has spearheaded the regional adaptation of the SME Climate Hub. This adaptation ensures that the program is culturally relevant, linguistically accessible, and aligned with the specific context of the region. Notably, the SME Climate Hub is now available in Arabic for the first time, removing language barriers and fostering wider participation.

A Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Transformation

The development and implementation of COP28 & SME Climate Hub for MENA is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving sustainable transformation. The program is being executed in close partnership with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar, with the support of First Abu Dhabi Bank and the Abu Dhabi Chamber. This collective effort underscores the commitment of these organizations to empowering SMEs and fostering a more sustainable business ecosystem in the MENA region.

Anticipated Impact: Empowering Thousands of SMEs

With its innovative approach and comprehensive support system, COP28 & SME Climate Hub for MENA is poised to make a significant impact, empowering thousands of SMEs across the region to embrace net-zero strategies and contribute meaningfully to climate action. The program is expected to generate substantial benefits in the lead up to COP28 and beyond, setting a precedent for sustainable business practices within the MENA region.
