The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has launched its first ‘Dubai Sustainability Report

The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has launched its first ‘Dubai Sustainability Report’ at the Arabian Travel Market, spotlighting the city’s strides and ongoing efforts in sustainability. The report supports the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), aiming to place Dubai among the top three global cities for business, leisure, and living.

The report underscores the vital role of public-private partnerships in advancing Dubai’s sustainability initiatives. Collaboration between government entities and businesses has propelled responsible tourism, especially in rural communities, conservation areas, and historical districts.Dubai’s sustainability efforts are backed by a robust ecosystem and advanced infrastructure. These efforts align with global objectives such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 initiatives, which have been extended into the Year of Sustainability 2024.

The report highlights Dubai’s support for start-ups developing innovative solutions to optimize resource use. These include fuel-saving flight paths and efficient hotel booking systems, which help reduce operational waste and environmental impact. The hospitality sector is encouraged to adopt comprehensive sustainable practices to cater to People of Determination, ensuring that travel in Dubai is inclusive and accessible for all.

The Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative by DET is pivotal in promoting sustainable tourism. It comprises four pillars: Standards, Awards, Programs, and Education, aimed at raising awareness and educating the sector.Launched in July 2023, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp recognizes hotels that adhere to DET’s 19 Sustainability Requirements. As of January, 70 hotels have been awarded this stamp. Since 2017, the Carbon Calculator tool has been measuring the carbon footprint of hotels across Dubai, aiding in sustainability tracking.

Led by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Can initiative promotes reusable bottles and has significantly reduced single-use plastic bottles through 50 water fountains across the city. The initiative has also seen the launch of the Dubai Reef project, aiming to develop the world’s largest marine reef.

DET is also enhancing its sustainability efforts through educational platforms like ‘Dubai Way,’ managed by the Dubai College of Tourism (DCT). This platform offers the ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism’ course, educating government and private sector staff on Dubai’s sustainability goals through self-paced modules. The inaugural Dubai Sustainability Report is a testament to Dubai’s dedication to sustainability, outlining a comprehensive approach towards a greener future. Through collaborative efforts, innovative solutions, and educational initiatives, Dubai is setting a benchmark for sustainable development in the region and beyond.
