Mobile Operators Drive 85% of Investments in Mobile Internet Connectivity: GSMA Report

Posted on 3 March 20253 March 2025 By Chris Peterson No Comments on Mobile Operators Drive 85% of Investments in Mobile Internet Connectivity: GSMA Report

The latest GSMA Mobile Economy Report has revealed that mobile operators account for 85% of investments in mobile internet connectivity infrastructure, underscoring their pivotal role in expanding digital access globally. Released during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, the report highlights the significant financial commitments made by telecom companies to improve network coverage, enhance service quality, and support the transition to 5G and beyond.

Bridging the Digital Divide

According to the GSMA, mobile operators have invested heavily in network expansion and upgrades, particularly in emerging markets where connectivity gaps remain a key challenge. With over 4 billion people still lacking access to mobile internet, these investments are seen as essential in reducing the digital divide and fostering economic growth, innovation, and social inclusion.

“Mobile connectivity is the backbone of the digital economy, and operators continue to lead the charge in infrastructure deployment,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of GSMA. “Their investments are not only powering technological advancements but also ensuring that millions of unconnected individuals gain access to life-changing digital services.”

5G Expansion and Future-Proofing Networks

The report emphasizes that much of the current investment is being directed toward the deployment of 5G networks, with operators worldwide spending billions to modernize existing infrastructure. GSMA projects that 5G connections will surpass 2 billion by 2025, driven by rapid adoption in regions like North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

However, challenges remain in developing economies, where high spectrum costs, regulatory barriers, and affordability issues hinder the widespread adoption of 5G and advanced mobile broadband services. Governments and policymakers are urged to support telecom investments by facilitating spectrum allocation, reducing taxation, and fostering public-private partnerships to accelerate digital inclusion.

Mobile Operators at the Heart of Digital Transformation

Beyond connectivity, mobile operators are playing a central role in driving digital transformation across industries. From smart cities and IoT applications to AI-driven mobile services, telecom providers are at the forefront of innovation, enabling businesses and governments to leverage digital technologies for economic growth.
